This year, CDI and NZCC think tank dialogue series continues with a focus on supply chain relationship between China and New Zealand, and challenges and opportunities for both countries.
The recent report released by NZCC on NZ’s import relationship with China revealed that China remains NZ’s top supplier of goods, including in emerging areas like green technology, greatly contributes to NZ’s decarbonization effort, and does not pose any systemic risk to NZ’s economy.
In this edition of CDI-NZCC dialogue, government, industry and think tank representatives will shed light on the future and challenges of bilateral trade relations, specifically green tech and renewable energy supply chain cooperation, and on Southern Link and how it can benefit New Zealand, China and Latin America.

Ever since the establishment of diplomatic relations 60 years ago, bilateral trade between China and France has grown rapidly. Today, France is China's third-largest trading partner in the EU and the third-largest source of actual investment, while China is France's largest trading partner in Asia and seventh in the globe. The economic complementarity of the two countries provides a huge potential for China-France cooperation.

In face of the current complicated situation, how China and France can further coordinate and jointly build a more resilient supply chain to achieve mutually beneficial relations is the keen concern to both countries. Despite the obstacles that have arisen, opportunities can still be found to sustain economic ties between China and France.

Southeast Asia is one of the world’s most economically dynamic regions. In recent years, the major energy-consuming countries within ASEAN, including Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand, have made carbon neutral commitments and introduced a series of policies for promoting their transition to low-carbon power. As a supporter and actor of clean energy transition among developing countries, China has promoted a series of clean energy projects within the region. China and ASEAN are looking to formulate stronger policies to expand cooperation in the energy sphere, such as construction projects, experience and knowledge sharing, and the reconfiguration of electricity system.
Against such background, China Development Institute and KSI Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific will host the China-ASEAN Think Tank Webinar on 25 April 2024, bringing together experts and role players from China and ASEAN in discussion of the challenges and cooperation opportunities in energy transition.
Focus for debate:
- What are the main difficulties and potential obstacles when it comes to implementing the energy transition for both China and ASEAN countries?
- What challenges and risks still remain when China and ASEAN countries reconfigure their electricity system around renewable energy?
- In terms of regional energy cooperation, how could China and ASEAN countries complement and reinforce each other in areas such as clean energy development, regional renewable energy supply chain, and electricity trading?
