Message from the President

Written by

China Development Institute (CDI) has been established for more than 20 years. Led by politicians and economists in the previous generation, young intellectuals in CDI have created a unique model for its development in Shenzhen, a pioneer city of reform, which contributes greatly to the economic reform and development, especially to China’s soft science, research and consulting on public policy.

China still has a long way to go on its reform and development. During the process of industrialization, urbanization and internationalization, new problems and conflicts would continuously come out and getting more and more complicated. Hence professional institutions with broader visions and knowledge are in need to make in-depth study on public policies and provide practical recommendations for the governments. 20 years experience has laid a solid foundation for CDI’s further development. In the 21st century, CDI should keep on committing itself to upgrade knowledge, to improve research quality and to cultivate talents in a bid to meet the demand of new situation and to make more contributions to sustain China’s prosperity.

Message from the Chairman

Written by

China Development Institute (CDI) is the fruit of China’s Reform and Open-door Policy. It would be an innovative course to operate such a newly-style research and consulting organization. A group of economists, business leaders and social activists, with Ma Hong, Li Hao, Chen Jinhua, Jiang Yiwei, Gao Shangquan and Lin Ling as the representatives have made great contributions to the initiation and development of CDI.

With 20 years’ development, CDI has cultivated an efficient research team with fruitful research achievements. CDI is now standing at a jumping-off point for a brighter future. There are five objectives for CDI to achieve: to cultivate the talents, to upgrade research level, to enlarge social influence, to expand cooperation, and to set up brand reputation.

As a think tank, CDI should always keep its eye on the strategic issues in China’s reform and opening-up by presenting policy recommendations, problem solutions, and consulting reports to make more active contributions to a harmonious society.

Chairman
China Development Institute
Former Minister of Finance, China

China Development Institute (CDI), a think tank based in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, was founded in 1989 with the approval of the State Council to promote China's reform and opening-up, and to expand international academic exchange and cooperation. In 2015, CDI was approved as one of the 25 China Top Think Tanks Construction Pilot Units.

The mission set by its founders is to conduct high-quality and independent research to provide innovative insight and practical recommendations for business and public policy leaders. Since it was established, CDI has been committing to the exploration of a new route for Chinese research and consultation organizations through reform and institutional innovation that fits China's actual conditions. CDI has grown to become one of the leading think tanks in China for its problem-solving research and consulting service.

CDI gathers together 140 full-time staff and with a network of affiliated scholars and experts. Mr. Xiang Huaicheng, Former Minister, Ministry of Finance, is the Chairman and Prof. Fan Gang, a noted economist in China, is the president.
