During a discussion hosted by the Mexican Council on Foreign Relations and CDI on September 12, 2024, Chinese and Mexican officials, scholars, and entrepreneurs shared insights on the trajectory of Sino-Mexican relations against the backdrop of U.S.-Mexican relations, as well as the opportunities and challenges for Chinese businesses investing in Mexico. The discussion enabled both sides to better understand and prepare for the future landscape of Sino-Mexican trade.

CDI delegation led by President Prof. Fan Gang visited Chicago think tanks on September 10, 2024. During the roundtable discussion, Professor Fan addressed China’s economic development and the prospects for U.S.-based international companies operating in China. Academics and business leaders were gathered together to exchange views on the future of Sino-U.S. foreign and trade relations, U.S. trade policies regarding renewable energy industries and supply chains, as well as their broader implications.

On November 29, 2024, a delegation from The Executive Office of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum (TEO) visited CDI. The discussions focused on cultural exchange, tourism collaboration, and policy alignment, while highlighting significant opportunities for cooperation in trade, investment, technological innovation, and cultural initiatives. Both sides also reached consensus that Dubai and Shenzhen share similarities in their rapid economic growth and notable achievements. Both cities are actively advancing efforts to further engage with the international community.

The 2024 Global Chinese Economic and Technology (GCET) Summit was held on November 26, 2024, in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The event was organized by the KSI Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific and supported by the China Development Institute (CDI).
The world is facing growing economic and geopolitical uncertainties and challenges, impacting governments and business communities worldwide. Developing economies, including China and ASEAN nations, are especially vulnerable in these circumstances. In his opening speech, President of CDI Prof Fan Gang emphasized that, in order to overcome these difficulties and turn them into opportunities, closer international and regional cooperation, knowledge exchange, and collective action are essential.
The summit was attended by His Excellency Hun Manet, Prime Minister of Cambodia; His Excellency Dr. Aun Pornmoniroth, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance of Cambodia; and His Excellency Wang Wenbin, Ambassador of China to Cambodia. Government, business, and thought leaders were gathered together to discuss how China and ASEAN countries could collaborate to foster responsible policies, promote trade and investment, and advance scientific and technological innovation.

On June 24, 2024, in the roundtable on collaboration between universities and think tanks on climate action, green and sustainable development, Prof Fan Gang, President of China Development Institute, underscored that it is critical for the international community to expand dialogues and exchanges of knowledge sharing on green technological innovation and application. He further disputed the so-called “over capacity” of Chinese electric vehicle, as China’s domestic EV market continued to grow and saw EV penetration rate soaring from 5.4% in 2020 to 31.6% in 2023. Looking at the global new energy sector, current production is yet to meet market demand and serious shortage of high-quality product remains. China will continue the effort to meet UN Sustainable Development Goals and accelerate the development of renewable energy industries. The roundtable was attended by Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, Former Chief Minister of Penang.

The 2024 World Green & Sustainability Summit held on June 25, 2024 in Penang Malaysia, organized by World Digital Chamber, World Green Organization, KSI Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific and supported by China Development Institute, convened government leaders, think tankers, and entrepreneurs from APEC countries to address strategic issues and key challenges in promoting partnership for climate action, energy transition and the business communities to pivot towards sustainable investments, green growth and green finance. In his opening speech, President of CDI Prof. Fan Gang urged collaboration on climate action and stressed the importance of green products and green technologies in contribution to sustainable growth. The summit was attended by Governor of Penang Tun Dato’ Seri Utama Ahmad Fuzi.

On May 23, 2024, Prof. Simon Tay led Singapore Institute of International Affairs (SIIA) delegation to CDI. Exchange surrounded topics such as new quality production forces, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), and economic cooperation prospect between ASEAN and GBA. Due to GBA’s proximity to ASEAN, trade activity between the two sides has been dynamic and continued to grow, pivoting from manufacturing to service sector. Looking forward, the bilateral trade, investment, science and technology exchange and cooperation could be further facilitated via GBA platforms.

On March 26, 2024, New Zealand delegation led by H.E. Ambassador Grahame Morton visited CDI. The visit sparked in-depth discussions on various topics, including economic policies concerning the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), development progress of the GBA, and cross border industrial cooperation within the GBA. CDI experts introduced the latest trends of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Innovation and Technology Park (HSITP) located in the Lok Mak Chou Loop sitting on the Hong Kong-Shenzhen border. With preferential policy incentives in place, the HSITP will greatly facilitate the cross-border flow of production resources including capitals, talents and data. In the meanwhile, Shenzhen is becoming the forefront of reform and opening-up with the digital upgrading of traditional industries and the expansion of emerging industries. Both sides agree that China and New Zealand should explore cooperation projects in areas such as digital economy, digital trade and artificial intelligence.

Nature-based solutions (NbS) refers to actions that effectively address social, economic and environmental challenges through the protection, sustainable management and restoration of natural and modified ecosystems. Since the official introduction of NbS by the World Bank in 2008, it has been increasingly applied on climate action, disaster prevention, food security, water security, and ecosystem degradation.
On March 19, 2024, Prof. Dr. Carsten Herrmann-Pillath from University Erfurt was invited to share his latest research findings on NbS and designing biodivercity at CDI’s international symposium. The event was joint by role players from the public and private sectors in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Discussion dived into how to build a co-evolutionary relationship between natural ecology and technological city to achieve more inclusive and resilient urban development.

On Mar 19, 2024, Consul General of India to Guangzhou Mr. Shambhu Hakki visited CDI. Discussion focused on China’s macro-economic outlook, Guangdong’s economic development, and Sino-India trade relations. Given the growing trade activities between China and India, research should be conducted to identify industrial cooperation opportunities and formulate policies and mechanisms in order to deepen the bilateral economic cooperation amid global uncertainties.

Consul-General of New Zealand in Guangzhou Ms. Rachel Crump visited CDI on February 27, 2024. Discussion surrounded topics such as New Zealand and Guangdong’s trade relation, Shenzhen’s economic development, and the trends of electric vehicles in China. Dr. Guo Wanda, Executive Vice President of CDI, provided an overview of BYD’s development since its establishment in Shenzhen in 1995. With the strong economic and trade ties between New Zealand and China, both sides agree to explore and expand the scope of cooperation in such areas of digital economy, digital trade, and green energy in the future.

From 21st to 26th Jan 2024, Prof. Fan Gang, President of China Development Institute, was invited by the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to visit Hong Kong and conduct in-depth exchange with government officials, including Financial Secretary Mr. Paul Chan Mo-po and President of the Legislative Council Mr. Andrew Leung, and various HKSAR departments discussing Hong Kong’s latest trends of political, economic and social developments.
Although Hong Kong was faced with external challenges, its economy saw steady growth in 2023. Stable increase of net fund inflow into the stock market and expansion of the scale of asset and wealth management showed that investor’s confidence in Hong Kong international financial center remained strong. Looking forward, Hong Kong will continue to strengthen its ties with the international market, further integrate within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, while transforming itself into a hub for innovation and technology development.
During his visit, Prof. Fan attended the Asian Financial Forum and chaired the panel discussion on “Stewarding China’s New Chapter”.
