Highlights
The seminar held discussions on development opportunities and latest policies of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area and San Francisco Bay Area, which can establish partnership in the following areas: infrastructure, high-end manufacturing, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, environmental protection, and education and cultural exchanges.
With logistics becoming smarter and more flexible, the scale and efficiency of airports will be crucial in the allocation of resources and production processes of bay areas. Therefore, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area can promote the expansion of airports with a rapidly growing civil aviation market, which present a great opportunity for infrastructure cooperation with San Francisco Bay Area.
Compared to other regions in China, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area has advantages in cloud computing, artificial intelligence, big data, drones and new energies, etc., all of which represent potential fields for cooperation with the San Francisco Bay Area. The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area will witness a gradual shift from the traditional processing-centered manufacturing system to the one led by innovation. Therefore, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area will develop independent R&D to tackle American constraints on technology transfer.
The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area has certain advantages in genetics and stem cell research which have potential for cooperation with the San Francisco Bay Area. Differences in medical standards between Hong Kong and China’s mainland mean that certain technologies can enter into Hong Kong but not the Chinese mainland. These technologies can then first enter the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Park in Lok Ma Chau Loop.
The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area has paid a high price for environment in the past and will need great technological and financial support in key areas such as waste treatment, river management and soil restoration, which is another cooperation area for the two bay areas.
The two bay areas can also cooperate in elementary education, higher education, and urban cultural amenities and sports stadiums, etc..
Mr. Keith Carson, Supervisor Fifth District, Board of Supervisors, County of Alameda, California, noted that despite potential difficulties caused by rising trade tensions, connections between the two bay areas have never stopped. The two bay areas should continue communication to explore possibilities for pragmatic partnership in health and medicine, artificial intelligence and environmental protection etc.
